Episode Summary:
In this episode of The Solo Grind, I’m talking about something we don’t talk about enough. Nurturing the people who are already here. It’s so easy to get caught up chasing new leads, new followers, new subscribers… but the real magic happens when you take care of the ones who already said yes.
I’m sharing why focusing on those existing relationships can actually grow your business faster (and feel better, too), plus simple ways to keep your clients and audience engaged, happy, and excited to come back, and even bring others along with them. Let me show you how loving the ones you’re with can build a business you actually want to wake up to.
What I hope you take away from today's episode...
- Chasing “more” isn’t the only way to grow your business, and it’s not always the best way.
- The people who already said yes deserve your time, energy, and attention first!
- Happy clients are your best marketing tool. Referrals and testimonials start with a great experience.
- You don’t need thousands of followers to have a thriving business. You just need to show up for the ones you have.
- Little things go a long way: a personal note, a check-in, a thank you can mean more than a flashy campaign.
- Building something meaningful and sustainable feels better than running yourself ragged chasing numbers.
- It’s okay to slow down and serve the people who already believe in you. They’re the ones who will help you grow.

One of the questions that I get the most often is how do I get more? More leads, more followers, more subscribers. And today I am going to share with you why focusing on getting more isn't where you need to be spending a bulk of your time and just what you need to be focusing on instead to build a solid foundation for a thriving business.
Hello my friends and welcome to The Solo Grind and happy Tuesday or whatever day it is that you are tuning in and listening. My mission, my goal in life is to help people stand out in a world where everybody wants to be the same and blend in. Because I have learned the hard way that the best way to get noticed, to get the clients that you are dreaming of and to build the business that you want, you have got to stand out and be a little bit different, which means basically to be yourself. So for those of you connecting here with me for the very first time, welcome, I love having you here. And for those that have been tuning in week after week, welcome back. I love connecting with you here. If you feel so called to reach out and connect with me, just scroll on down to the show notes and you can text me, you can book a consult, you can visit my website, and you can find me on social media. I love connecting with new people and I would love to connect with you.
I want to have a conversation about why we need to stop putting so much time and energy into focusing on that chase for more.
More leads, more followers, more subscribers, and why we need to start taking a little bit more time and focus and energy on taking care of the people who have already said yes. So here's a quick look at what I'm going to be sharing in today's episode. First, I want to talk about why nurturing your current clients, leads, subscribers and followers matters a lot more than you think. I want to talk about why it's more effective and better for your business than chasing new people. And specifically, I want to share some ways to love the one you're with, or the ones who are with you, and keep your audience engaged and happy.
Why do we get stuck in chasing more?
Well, because we're told to. So much focus out there when it comes to advice for the entrepreneurial world is to get more leads, get more followers, get new this. And we have these really lofty, ridiculous goals in mind of what is enough. The truth is, my friends, enough is the ones who show up to help pay the bills. You don't need 10,000 followers to have a thriving business. I know a billionaire who has 600 followers, okay? He has multiple businesses. He does very well for himself and he has 600 followers, and that is 600 including his podcast, his email list, his social media following, all of that combined. You don't need a ton more. Growth is good. Absolutely, growth is good. Growth helps fill your pipeline for tomorrow, but it's not the only thing.
And when we are pouring all of our time and energy into finding new people, we start to neglect the people who are already in our corner, the people who have already said yes. Those that have already agreed to follow you on social media, those who engage with your posts, those who subscribe to your newsletter and open it and read it, those who book a consult with you or a discovery call with you, and those who say yes and actually give you their hard-earned money. When we don't nurture those people who have said yes, we are missing out on opportunities. We are losing clients after one project because it just wasn't that stellar of an experience with them. And even though we may have provided them with a solid product or service, the experience wasn't one to write home to mom about. And we lose out on referrals, loyalties, and testimonials. But it's more than just ending the chase.
We also want to take time to love the ones who are with us.
And what I mean by that is we want to nurture those relationships because I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is far more cost-effective to keep clients than it is to replace them. People who already know you and trust you are more likely to say yes again in the future when they need additional services because they've already gone through the vetting process. They already know what it's like to work with you. They know how you show up. They know how you support them. They know that their needs are going to be met and they know that they're not going to regret giving you their money. So when the time comes that they need additional services, guess who they're going to reach out to? You.
Another reason that you want to focus on loving the ones you're with and nurturing those relationships is because happy clients become your best marketing.
The other day I was doing an audit for a website for one of Nancy Quinn's clients and she said nobody comes to her through her website. Nobody at all. Nobody even fills out the contact form. All of her clients are referral-based. That's the magic, that's the power right there. Referrals are one of the best marketing tools out there, and hands down, my referrals are often the best clients that I get. Those referrals already have started to like, know, and trust you based on that recommendation. They are already more prepared to say yes to working with you than if it was a cold lead of somebody who just stumbled upon you and knows nothing at all about you.
Another reason happy clients are your best marketing is because they're willing to share testimonials. They had such a great experience working with you that they're going to let other people know and they're going to share that testimonial. And as I said before, they're going to come back. And here's a little side benefit that a lot of times we don't think about: it simply feels really good. It feels amazing when we are building something real, when we are building something that's focused on passion of what we want to do to create our corner of the world a better place. It feels so much more amazing than when we are just creating something that's transactional and focused on money.
How do we show up and love the ones who are with us?
First, take a look at your audience, at your followers. This is social media subscribers, this is your email subscribers, anyone who follows you and pays attention to what you have to say. Show up and check in. Let people know what's going on in your world on social media and through email. Share experiences, share some of your wins, share your values, share behind-the-scenes looks at what it is to be you and the work that you do. Celebrate your clients. Share those pieces out there because it shows that you are actively engaging with the world you want to support. If you have an email list, don't just email when you have something to sell. Those are the first people I unsubscribe from. I want encouragement, tips, stories, experiences.
When I go to send an email out to my subscribers, it's a personal email to each and every one of the people on my list. I don't just type up some stuff and say, here you go world. I think about my client avatar. I think about the people who are on that list, some of whom I've gotten to know personally and the others I hope to get to know in the future. And I write that letter specifically to them.
If you only have one subscriber, treat them like a VIP.
Treat them like the very important person that they are to you. I pour the same amount of love into my email list no matter how many subscribers I have. Each and every email I write to my subscribers is personal.
And personalize your communications. Make your captions in social media a conversation with your audience. When somebody comments on your post, reply back to them and mention them by name. When you're sending emails, personalize it by adding in their first name.
The last thing when it comes to loving on your audience and your followers is have a real, genuine conversation. Don't just constantly be pitching yourself or trying to sell yourself. Have a conversation. Share your wins, share your struggles with reason, share behind the scenes. All of these things help create a relationship with your audience and your followers, with your subscribers.
How we show some love to our paying clients.
They absolutely deserve our love the most. First, be clear in your communications. Tell them what's next and what to expect. Don't take the personality out of those communications. Address them by name, reach out and let them know what to expect.
Next, deliver what you promise with a little smidge more worked into it. Deliver what you promise and then give them a little wow factor.
And lastly, stay in touch even after the project ends. Let them know that you still care. Follow them on social media. Reach out and connect. Celebrate their wins. Stay a part of their life.
The goal isn't to have more. It's about building a business that is meaningful
About building something that is real and true and something that you want to share with the world that you're going to be proud of. Keep showing up for the people who are already standing by your side because they matter, they believed in you before anyone else, and you want to show them the love for doing so.
Because when you do, when you make them feel seen and valued and cared for, they're going to keep coming back and they're going to bring other people with them.
Thank you so much for being here, for tuning in once again, and for just being part of my audience. I truly do love and respect each and every one of you. Until we meet again, have a great, wonderful, fabulous week ahead, and I will see you all next week.
