The Website “Field of Dreams”

Building a website is not enough – You have to drive traffic to your website.

There is a myth in the world of web designs, that can be summed up with a quote from the Movie Field of Dreams...

"If you build it, he will come". the ghost of Shoeless Joe Jackson

We all like to think that building a website is enough. And we imagine our dreams clients filling up our calendars shortly after we launch.

Sadly, that is just not the case.

The reality is that building your website isn’t enough. You have to invite people in to see, and yes I am talking about driving traffic to your website. This is where website traffic strategy comes into play, and today I want to share with you three strategic steps anyone can take to start driving traffic to their website.

1. Include Your Website in Your Contact Information – Everywhere!

It sounds like a no-brainer, but you will be surprised how many people simply aren’t putting their website out there in the world to be found. I cannot tell you how many times I have received a business card or a professional email, and visited someone’s social media page only to find no website address included. These are simple easy places where you can make your website’s presence known, and they are just the tip of the iceberg.

Here’s the short list of where you should be listing your website:

  • Business cards
  • Any printed marketing materials
  • Email signature
  • Google Business Profile
  • Business social media page about sections
  • Personal social media page about section
  • Online directories

And if you are sitting here thinking, “But Teresa I hate sending people to my website, it is just not me.” Then click here now and let’s chat! Everyone should love their website otherwise it is a wasted resource.

2. Repurpose Your Website Content for Social Media

Your website isn’t just pretty pictures and clever words—it’s a resource. It’s where people can find out how you work, what services you offer, and how to get started with you. And here’s the fun part: those same resources can do double duty as social media content.

Think about it: every time you answer an email explaining your process, share your scheduling link, or send someone to your portfolio—you’ve got a ready-made post you can use to drive traffic back to your site. No reinventing the wheel.

Here are a few easy ideas:

☕ Publish a new blog? Share a quick snippet and link them to the full post.
☕ Offer online scheduling? Drop your link and invite followers to grab a spot.
☕ Add a new service? Highlight what makes it great and link straight to your services page.
☕ Finish a project you’re proud of? Share a few photos and send people to your portfolio to see more.
☕ Have a process that sets you apart? Talk about it! Then link to your process page for the details.

And don’t overthink where to share. Your business page, your personal page, even groups you’re a part of (as long as you play by the rules). The point is, you’ve already created the content. Now it’s time to get more mileage out of it.

3. Start working on your SEO

Okay I know, you are probably tired of hearing about SEO but there is a place for it, and it honestly getting started isn’t as complicated as you may think. There are three things that anyone can do to give their SEO a boost. Sure there are definitely more robust solutions and strategies, but these 3 things won’t make your head hurt and will get you started building a solid foundation of SEO.

1. Tap into your dream customers keywords and phrases

This is the one that baffles and sometimes scares us, but it really isn’t that hard to do. Just imagine you are looking over your dream customer’s shoulder as they search Google for what you have to offer. What words are they typing into the search bar? These are your keywords and phrases.

2. Use keywords and phrases in the right places

Where you place those keywords and phrases matters

  • Page titles
  • Subtitles
  • Headings
  • Body copy
  • Meta description for your page

Remember this is definitely one of those times when less is best. Overusing the keywords and phrases often just leads to awkward disjointed writing and the search bots are going to ding you for bad writing. Simply use the words and phrases organically throughout your writing.

3. Title your images

Did you know that when you add titles, alt. titles (tags) to your images after uploading them to your website you are supporting SEO? And did you know you are helping the visually impaired? It’s true, those titles do more than improve your online visibility. They help those with visual impairments have a much better experience on your website as well as a better understanding of what you are sharing.
