Marketing isn’t just about showing up everywhere. It’s about showing up well.
And when you’re running the show solo, that means your marketing strategy needs to fit you, not just the latest trends.
Today, I’m breaking down what sustainable, strategic marketing really looks like when you’re a one-person business. No pressure to go viral. No guilt if you’re not on every platform. Just honest, practical insight to help you find your groove and reach the right people… your people.
Here’s a peek at what I’ll be walking you through:
☕ Why most marketing advice isn’t made for solo entrepreneurs (and what to do instead)
☕ The three questions to ask before you start posting anything
☕ How to choose a strategy that works with your bandwidth, not against it
☕ And why “going viral” might be the last thing you actually need
You’ll also get a behind-the-scenes look at the real-life marketing plan that helped me grow my business without losing my mind (or my weekends).
Whether you’re just getting started or rebuilding your strategy, this post will help you cut through the noise and craft a marketing approach that works for you. One cup of coffee and one clear message at a time.
Most Marketing Advice Wasn’t Made for You
If you’ve ever gone down the rabbit hole of “top marketing tips” only to emerge more confused than when you started… I see you.
The truth? Most marketing advice is built for people with teams or at least a lot more time and capacity than most solo entrepreneurs have. If you’re running your business on your own, with maybe a little help from a VA or bookkeeper, the idea of publishing daily content on four platforms is laughable (and exhausting).
You don’t need more tips.
You need a strategy that fits your actual bandwidth.
Why “Magic Solutions” Don’t Work (and How to Make Them Work for You)
It’s not that templates and strategies are useless. It’s just that they’re incomplete without you. Your story, your style, your clients, and your capacity matter.
You can absolutely borrow strategies, but they need to be adapted to fit your voice and your reality.
Marketing is personal, and what works for someone else won’t always work for you. The secret is to customize, not copy.
Why Viral Doesn’t Mean Valuable
Let’s talk about going viral for a second. Because yes, it’s exciting. Years ago I had a post hit 50K views in a weekend.
You know what happened?
Not. One. Client.
It got likes.
It got shares.
It got LOTS of comments
But it didn’t bring in the kind of people I actually want to work with. the ones who
☕ Care about strategy
☕ Appreciate great design
☕ And are ready to invest in their business.
Viral doesn’t equal valuable. Don’t chase fireworks. Build a steady flame.
So What Does Work when Marketing as a Solo Entrepreneur?
You don’t need to be everywhere. But you do need to be consistent and intentional.
The best marketing strategy is one you can actually stick with. One that’s rooted in how you show up best, where your people are, and what they care about.
Here’s what I ask myself, and my clients, before we build any kind of plan…
1. Where are your people actually spending time?
This might sound simple, but it’s one of the most overlooked questions in marketing. Are your dream clients on Instagram? Do they love podcasts? Are they reading local publications or checking out Google search results?
If you’re a local service provider, showing up at community events or getting featured on a local blog might do more for your business than dancing on TikTok.
2. What conversations are they already having?
Marketing is easier when you’re joining a conversation, not shouting into the void. What problems are your clients trying to solve right now? What questions are they asking?
Show up with something helpful. Offer your perspective. Tell a story. Be useful and human.
3. How can you show up with confidence?
If you love writing, focus on blog posts and newsletters. If talking is more your thing, record some casual videos or start a podcast. Don’t force yourself to use tools or platforms that make you feel awkward and anxious.
When you show up in a way that feels good to you, people can tell. That’s where trust begins.
Let Your Marketing Plan Be Simple and Sustainable
Once you’ve got clarity on the where, what, and how, keep your strategy simple:
☕ Pick 1-2 platforms or types of content.
☕ Commit to showing up regularly (even if that’s once a week).
☕ Evaluate what’s working. Not based on likes, but on connection and conversation.
☕ Let go of perfection. Let it be messy at first.
When I leaned fully into web design, I focused on daily Coffee Time Inspiration posts and Facebook Lives. That was it. No blog. No Pinterest. No complicated funnel. Just consistent presence where I could show up well, and in my own voice.
Three months in? I started getting real traction. Not from ads or magic algorithms. From connection.
Please Avoid This One Thing…
Whatever you do, please ignore the cold DMs and emails promising you 100 leads by Friday. Even if they could deliver, which is questionable, are those the kind of leads you want?
Spammy leads don’t respect your process. They don’t see your value. And they’re probably not your dream clients.
You don’t need a flood of unqualified inquiries.
You need the right ones.
The ones who read your content, connect with your message, and reach out because they trust you already.
Final Sip of Advice
Marketing as a solo entrepreneur isn’t about doing all the things. It’s about doing the right things for you, your business, and your people.
So take a deep breath. Refill your coffee. And remember:
You don’t have to keep up.
You just have to keep showing up
Consistently, confidently, and with a little soul.
If you do that? You’re already doing it right.
What’s your current marketing rhythm? And where are you feeling stuck or overwhelmed? I’d love to hear how you’re navigating this wild and wonderful solo grind.
