Your website footer may be a small space, but it can have a big impact on your business!
Let’s give a little love to the unsung hero of your website and share how to design a really well done website footer.
It’s easy to overlook this little section of your website, but don’t underestimate its power. A well-thought-out footer can tie everything together, keep your website legally secure, and provide visitors with key information.
For busy solo entrepreneurs like you (I see you over there juggling all the things), creating a footer that works for you is an easy win that pays off in big ways. Let’s break down the essentials you need and why they matter, and check off some of those “to-do” items on your website checklist.
The Power of Legal Pages
Legal pages are like the bouncers of your website—they’re there to keep everything in order and protect you when things get dicey. Without them, you’re leaving yourself open to unnecessary risks, like copyright disputes or privacy complaints.
Here’s what every footer should link to:
☕ Privacy Policy
If you’re collecting personal data (even something as simple as email addresses for your newsletter), this one is non-negotiable. A privacy policy lets visitors know how their information is used and stored, which builds trust and keeps you compliant with laws like GDPR or CCPA.
☕ Terms and Conditions
Think of this as the rulebook for your site. It outlines what visitors can and can’t do with your content and services. It’s especially helpful if you sell products or services directly on your website.
☕ Disclaimer
If you’re in a field like coaching or consulting, a disclaimer is your “liability shield.” It clarifies that your advice is informational and not a guarantee of specific results.
Pro Tip: Getting the proper legal pages on your website can be costly, but it doesn’t have to be. I recommend looking for a policy generator like Termageddon. They do the work for you behind the scenes ensuring your website is always up-to-date. And if you use COUPON CODE: TERESA you can save 10% off your first year. How cool is that!
(Yes, I’m an affiliate, but I’d recommend them even if I weren’t. If you prefer, skip the code—it’s all good!)
Don’t Forget the Copyright Date
A copyright notice might seem like a tiny detail, but it’s a legal powerhouse. It makes it clear that your content is yours and protected under copyright law. Think of it as your first line of defense against content theft.
Here’s How to Add It:
There is a specific way to add the copyright notice so that you are in alignment with all international copyright laws, but I promise it is easy!
- You need to have the copyright symbol ©. This is an internationally recognized symbol so there is no chance of misunderstanding.
- Write out the word copyright. Sure it seems like a no-brainer next to the symbol, but just in case someone who isn’t up on symbology stumbles upon your website you are covered!
- The year(s) of content you are protecting is necessary as well. So be sure to use the full range of dates for your content (e.g., 2020–2025 for ongoing updates)
- Your business name, because you are the one protecting your content after all.
- The words “All Rights Reserved.” as this clearly states you are protecting everything.
Example: © copyright 2011 – 2025 Your Business Name. All Rights Reserved.
Keep It Updated
An outdated copyright date can make your site look neglected, and it doesn’t protect newer content. Set up a dynamic code snippet to auto-update the year, or mark your calendar to do it manually each January.
Other Footer Elements to Consider
Your footer isn’t just about legal protection—it’s also a great way to create a user-friendly experience for your visitors. Here’s what else you might want to include:
- Contact Information: Make it easy for potential clients to reach out. Add your best contact info—email, phone number, or a link to your scheduling page. Whatever works best for you, make it accessible here.
- Social Media Links: Adding social media icons says, “Come hang out with me!” and keeps your audience connected across platforms.
- Navigation Links: Think of your footer as a mini-map. Include quick links to key pages like Services, About, and Blog, especially for visitors who’ve scrolled all the way down.
One fun link I love to include is a link to a Website Credit page. There are a lot of people that go into creating a well designed website from photographers, copy writers, to designers like me. Give me all a little love by creating a whole page dedicated to saying thank you! - Newsletter Signup: Want to grow your email list without being pushy? A low-key signup option in your footer keeps it classy while still inviting visitors to stay in touch.
Making the Most of a Small Space
Your footer may not be flashy, but it’s a workhorse. It protects your business, guides your visitors, and builds trust—all while sitting quietly at the bottom of your site.
Take a few minutes to review your website’s footer:
- Does it include the essentials?
- Is it helping your business look polished and professional?
If the answer is “not yet,” now you know what you need to do to spruce it up and make it work for you!
