The Art of a Designing a Standout Homepage
First impressions matter on your website too! Why not make them incredible!
Your homepage isn’t just a page on the web. It’s the front door to your business. It’s where visitors decide, often in seconds, whether they want to stick around or move on. No pressure, right?
The good news is that your homepage doesn’t have to do everything. It just needs to make a stellar first impression and guide your dream clients to the next step.
You also want a home page that “feels” like you. It’s not about being flashy; it’s about being purposeful and intentional with your messaging. This includes the design layout as well as the colors, imagery used and website written copy. Let’s dive into how to create a homepage that works smarter (and harder) for you.
Design for Clarity
I know you want to stand out and being cute and clever sounds like a good idea. It isn’t. Nobody likes playing “guess what I do” on the pages of your website, and that is often what happens when you strive for being cute and clever.
Your homepage should be crystal clear about what you offer, who you help, and why visitors should stick around. This is your chance to make a powerful first impression and show your audience they are in the right place.
Let’s get a little clarity… What’s the ONE thing you want visitors to know right away?
I know you have a lot you want to share, but you have to pick one, and only one. So what do your dream customers want and need to feel seen, understood, and excited to learn more? This is the question you want to answer the second someone lands on your home page.
Pro tips:
- Start with a bold headline: Something like, “Your Life, Beautifully Designed.” or “Make More Money and Achieve Your Biggest Goals Yet.”
- Add a subheading for depth: Think of it as your elevator pitch, like: “I offer custom interior design solutions that fit your life and your style.”
Balancing Visuals and Text
Your homepage should look amazing, but it also needs to work for your audience. The goal is to combine eye-catching visuals with clear, skimmable content that draws people in and keeps them exploring.
Here’s how to achieve the perfect blend…
- Use personal, high-quality images: Showcase your work, your process, and yourself. Skip the generic stock photos you see everywhere else. They just don’t connect.
- Break up text: You don’t want your website to feel like a college term paper. Use white space, icons, and bullet points to make your content feel approachable and easy to digest.
- Write for skimmers: I know this may come as a shock (although it really shouldn’t) but most visitors aren’t going to read every word. Bold phrases, clear headings, and short paragraphs help guide them through your message effortlessly.
Make Your Calls-to-Action (CTAs) Pop
Your homepage isn’t just about looking good. It’s about getting people to take action. I cannot tell you how many websites I have come across that have no calls to action available outside of the main navigation.
What is the first step you want potential clients to take? Book a call? Join your email list? Browse your portfolio? Whatever it is you want them to do, invite them to take action with strategically placed CTAs (calls-to-action). These are your secret weapon that makes taking action easy on your website when your visitors are ready to act. .
Make your CTAs work harder
- Be specific. Instead of offering generic suggestions such as “Click Here” and “Learn More,” try saying something like, “Let’s Chat About Your Dream Project” or “Start Your Free Trial Today.”
- Keep it focused. Again you don’t want to overwhelm your potential clients with options and you don’t need to share everything up front. Offer 1-3 CTAs that align with your goals, and leave it at that.
- Make them stand out. Bold colors, buttons, or larger fonts will naturally draw attention, inspiring action more easily.
Pro Tip: Using the same color for all calls to action across your website not only creates a cohesive look but also subtly encourages visitors to take the next step each time they see that color.
Guide Visitors to the Rest of Your Site
Your home page is kind of like a Table of Contents of what else your site contains. Rather than sharing all the things up front, share snippets about what you do to serve your clients, who you are, and how you can make their life better. You want to spark curiosity and point your visitors to the best parts of your site.
Here are some elements to consider adding to your home page…
- Highlight your services: Use short, engaging descriptions with links to your service pages. Think of it as a sneak peek that leaves them wanting more.
- Share a glowing testimonial: A snippet of praise can draw visitors in, and linking it to a full testimonials page builds even more trust.
- Showcase your blog or portfolio: Give a preview of your latest work or posts with clickable images or titles. It’s an easy way to keep visitors exploring.
- Encourage email signups: A simple, low-pressure invite to join your list can work wonders. Make it friendly and let them know what they’ll gain by signing up.
